In this article, we take you on a journey through the history, program, and special features of this unique event. And who knows, maybe we’ll run into each other there – after all, AniNite is also a place where the paths of cosplayers and fans cross. But more on that later. Let’s dive in!

The history of AniNite: From a nighttime gathering to a mega-convention

It all began in 2001. A group of anime enthusiasts in Vienna had the brilliant idea of meeting for a nighttime event to celebrate their shared passion. What started as a small gathering quickly developed into an event that made fans’ hearts beat faster. The first AniNite took place in a former shop space and already attracted 70 visitors. A success that motivated the organizers to think bigger the following year.

In 2002, the convention moved to the youth venue Area52 in the 21st district and welcomed over 150 visitors. A year later, in 2003, AniNite was expanded to three days for the first time and took place at the WUK. With over 900 visitors and an expanded program that included a cosplay competition and a manga reading corner, the foundation for its success story was laid.

The years went by, and AniNite continued to grow steadily. In 2008, a new record was set with over 4,000 visitors. The convention moved to larger premises and offered an even more diverse program. Special guests, workshops, and a Matsuri summer festival created unforgettable moments. AniNite had long since established itself as a permanent fixture in the anime and cosplay scene.
