The Comic Festival Hamburg brings exceptional culture to everyday places. Taking place for the 19th time this year, the festival is dedicated to introducing comic art, often perceived as niche, to a broad audience and has been bringing comics to cafés, shops, and walls in St. Pauli since 2006. The festival has now developed into one of the most important meeting points for the German comics scene. With a varied program of exhibitions, workshops, readings, and a fair, comic art is made accessible in a low-threshold way to trade visitors as well as local residents around St. Pauli and Neustadt. In close cooperation with the Illustration degree program at the Hamburg University of Applied Sciences, the program focuses on supporting local emerging talent. Comic artists are connected with one another, with publishers, and above all with a new walk-in audience. In addition to classic exhibitions in galleries and book presentations, the Comic Festival is distinguished by its use of shop windows and retail spaces as exhibition venues. In this unconventional way, we involve local businesses in the neighborhood and successfully promote networking within the district. In addition, guided tours and workshops introduce the work of comic creators to laypeople as well. A special children’s program encourages young artistic talent to read and draw.
